Our Christian varsity hoodie is a premium cotton fleece zip-up sporting a 1950’s style look. Back then, the letterman or varsity jacket was made of wool and leather with ribbed cuffs and collar and felt chenille patches. The felt letter idea dates way back to the late 19th century when Harvard first added H to their pullover sweaters. As decades passed, the sweater evolved into a more durable jacket material.
At TrueLight Designs, we wanted to combine a Christian theme with this vintage varsity style jacket. The front and back graphics were created to mimic the look of a felt patch, or at least have some type of texture which would feel similar on the Christian varsity zip-up hoodie. We accomplished this in Photoshop by adding a burlap texture.
Grace was the theme based upon 2 Peter 3:18, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
Adding university to the design came from the grow in grace and knowledge part of the Bible verse. Once converted, we are enrolled in grace, right? So, we began working in that direction making it a school type of graphic design. The apparel type was originally a long sleeve t-shirt but changed as the we explored the verse more and it didn’t look good on the tee anyway.
The front design came first. My wife and I wanted to have a comparable college university style look featuring the letter U underneath GRACE. The dove with the olive branch was our grace mascot connected with Genesis 6.
Adding 2 Peter 3:18 and established in AD 29 were the remaining touches to complete the college varsity jacket letter aesthetic. I hope you feel the idea! The back graphic design for our Christian varsity letterman jacket spelled out university with a tagline added, enrolled for life.
