Cellphone Use In The Church
Cellphone addiction is real. The symptoms are as real as someone who is addicted to a drug. I am not joking either. They display behavioral issues, inability to focus, depression over undone tasks, laziness, and the list goes on.
Why is cellphone use in the church an issue?
One word: distraction. The second statement is a phrase: habit and addiction. I know that sounds a little harsh but it’s the truth just the same.
There are many church people who have a real problem with cellphone usage in general not just during church time. One lady I knew spent over 56 hours in one week on her cellphone.
For Christians, the answer lies in prayer and return to the Word of God:
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Cell phones and Christianity
Someone once asked, “Is it a sin to use your phone in church?” As a preacher, I wouldn’t say it is a sin but I would remind you to put it away during worship. We’re in church for what 2 hours max or sometimes less depending on whether it is mid-week service or Sunday service.
Why do Christians need to use their cellphones in church when they should be worshipping?
Which is worse today, a person who constantly lights up a cigarette every 5 minutes or someone who has to have their phone in hand every other minute? They average about the same. It is an undisputed addiction. Another question came up as well, “Is being on your phone in church disrespectful?”
YES!
Unless there is an emergency, yes. Everyone in church should have their attention on the church service. God should be receiving your undivided attention without sharing it with Facebook, Tiktok, or Instagram. He is a jealous Savior!
I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Cellphone Use in the Church exercise:
Go into your cellphone settings and locate Screen Time. For iPhone users, go to settings and scroll a little and you’ll see Screen Time. Click on it and see the truth – your phone tracks usage. If you use Android, go to settings/Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls.
Here you’ll see length of time spent on cellphone per day and where the time is being spent. Denying the truth will not change anything. What you see is what you are doing.
