Oh, to be back in the eighties when the only distraction was everything analog!
In a world dominated by apps, constant notifications, endless algorithms, and the addictive nature of social media, everyone’s minds are, well, fried. We all know the doomscrolling experience, “I just logged on to check something and then three hours later…”
Ever said this?
The great difference between a book, even a Kindle lightweight for that matter, and your smartphone is blatantly obvious. A book is just a book no notifications, no apps, no social media. All you do is, uh, read, lol! That’s it. Don’t you feel the simplicity already?
Totally weird!
The Antagonist Called Doomscrolling
Research tells us digital consumption impacts our attention spans, elevates our anxiety levels, and limits deep, contemplative thought. When we feed our minds a steady diet of 10-second vid clips from Tik-Tok, Youtube or Instagram plus snack on fast-paced feeds, we inadvertently, unintentionally starve our minds.
What husband, wife, mother, father, teacher, or preacher hasn’t noticed the effect caused by obsessive cellphone usage: inability to concentrate, not getting things done, insomnia, mood swings, fatigue. Here’s a direct one for you married folks: marital stress due to digital addiction. Okay, I said it nicely.
The problem is everywhere; in every household and it’s serious. Husbands and wives are having problems because one, if not both, is addicted to cellphone use. Look, all you have to do on your iPhone is go to Settings, scroll down to Screen Time and see the truth. Some spend more hours on their phones than at a full-time job per week.
I guarantee the data will show the majority of the time spent is in social media. Social Media is the #1 location for endless doomscrolling things totally irrelevant to your life.
Protagonist Book Lover T-Shirt
At TrueLight Designs, we are in the fight for your peace of mind. That’s why we’re incredibly excited to introduce our latest graphic release a true book lovers booktok shirt:
“Turning Pages Nurtures the Mind. Scrolling Starves It.”
The design was created using Canva and Photoshop. The font is academic with accompanying graphics to emphasize the message. It took a couple of days to get the look and feel of the graphic design just right. After the basic black and white version was made, we tested it on apparel in order to decide what shirt colors would work.
Once the shirt color was determined, the color of the design came next. Fall colors for the shirts were selected: yam, espresso, blue spruce, hemp, sandstone, and mustard, with black and ivory as neutrals. In Photoshop, we were able to copy the shirt color and use it for the text color matching up light color text to dark shirt and vice versa.
Our minds need nurturing not mesmerizing. In church there is an old saying, “the mind can only absorb what the seat can endure.” Ha, Ha, referring to the long winded preacher. However, the point is true.
As a pastor, I try my very best to live by this rule while teaching. I know people have had long weeks and usually lots of things going on in their lives when sitting for a sermon. This means a lot on their minds too thus, the reason we have worship before the teaching as it settles the mind.
My goal is two-fold: keep their attention and nurture whatever percentage of mind I am working with at the moment with a good word from God.
Church is a great place to exercise turning pages. Yes, we can have smartphones with Bible apps but there’s nothing like opening the bible without needing a screen with all its distractions. When we read a book, our minds engage differently, solemnly, and quietly.
